Streaming, Zombies, and Naughty Words

So I missed last week’s what’s new post. There have been some fairly significant changes in my life recently, so I blame that (and snow, dammit Snow).

Snow sucks.

This guy sucks.

Recently, my friend and I have been getting serious about streaming fighting games. You can see some videos of the Pittsburgh fighting game scene here and the stream here. We’re doing it right now under the name of CMUken.

Since we have all this stuff though, we asked ourselves: “why not stream outside of CMUken”? For instance, since animu fighters rarely get streamed at tournaments, maybe we could offer our services to them. With that sentiment, Team 2A was born.

Winter 2012 Anime: Apocalypse Edition (and recap)

New season of anime’s already upon us:

Winter 2012 Anime

Winter 2012 Anime

Still.

Fate/Zero – I was really surprised by now good this show is. I think what makes it so much better than Fate/Stay is that there isn’t a boring-as-hell main character whose only purpose is that fanboys can fap live vicariously through him, instead choosing to more or less show all the various factions equally. But really, you should watch it for loli Rin.

Android Fish (Raw)

This is post will hopefully be the first in a series of posts where I recap something new or interesting that I’ve done in the week before. Since this is the first one, I’ll make it a bonus and include two of them.

I started to mess around with the Android SDK last week.

Android

Messin' around with Android.

For kneejerk impressions, I like how integrated the SDK is with Eclipse. It’s nice being able to do things like download different versions of the API (which corresponds to differing device versions), have a LogCat view (having a provided logger is also nice), manage AVDs, and being able to click run and have it run on my phone for testing.

2012: We’re (surprisingly) not dead.

Happy new year! It’s 2012, the year that Columbia Pictures predicted would be the end of the world.

Apocalypse Nanoha

How I imagine the world ending.

So what have I been up to in 2011?

  • Got a few things accepted into CSCW based on my work on GitHub (academia win)
  • Still pretty scrub, but I did get 3rd in Melty Blood at the SB:V side tourney (fighting game win… ish)
  • Centralized the fighting game community in Pittsburgh under the CMUken banner (fighting game community win)
  • Still slacking, but I’ve worked on a few (really) small side projects (hacking win… ish)
  • Interned at Google over the summer (internship win)
  • Still too heavy, but I lost some weight (P90X win)

Blogging… In the Cloud(s)

Virgin Airlines is pretty cool: you can checkout chromebooks (the Samsung ones) for use in select flights, and you get free in-flight wifi if you do.

So the entire purpose of this post is that I get to do so from 40k ft. up in the air.

Yep… that’s it.

Random picture of vocaloids in the cloud(s)

No, really, that's it.

Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code Demo (w/ netplay!) released!

Melty Blood is definitely one of my favorite fighting game series. In fact, it’s (MBAA specifically) probably the first fighting game that I’ve taken seriously.

It’s been a long-ass time, but they’re finally releasing the next revision (MBAACC 1.07), and the demo is out!

Miyako and Friends

Has nothing to do with Melty Blood, except that Miyako's adorable.

The demo features Arcueid, W.Arcueid, Sion, and V.Sion

Haven’t tried the netplay out yet since I can’t do port forwarding., but I’m really looking forward to trying it out later.

To Pedestrians In Pittsburgh

If you’re a pedestrian, and have ever yelled at me for riding my bike on the sidewalk, claiming that it’s “illegal” to do so. I have words for you:

Suck It.

Suck It.

Title 75, Chapter 33, Section 3508 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes states:

(a) Right-of-way to pedestrians.– A person riding a pedalcycle upon a sidewalk or pedalcycle path used by pedestrians shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.

(b) Business districts.– A person shall not ride a pedalcycle upon a sidewalk in a business district unless permitted by official traffic-control devices, nor when a usable pedalcycle-only lane has been provided adjacent to the sidewalk.

Data Porn – Express Edition

I’ve realized recently that I like data.

I realllly like data.

I blame quantitative research and machine learning (and Uiharu).

Uiharuuuu

Yeah, you heard me.

To be more specific, I’m starting to enjoy collecting data and trying to see if anything cool comes out of it. Professionally, this usually involves analyzing software and software communities. If you’re interested in what I do there, at some point I’ll link to my PhD student page (when I make it, ha!).

Personally though, I’ve noticed that I’ve started to use data collection to attempt to improve on my life in certain ways.
